Mini-Lesson: Argument Structure

Read pg.479-481 in your handout "Argument and Persuasion"
Major terms:
  • deductive reasoning
  • inductive reasoning
  • syllogism
Look at your column. Can you identify if the structure uses deductive or inductive reasoning? Syllogisms are not generally stated directly, but, if your column is a deductive argument, can you identify a syllogism upon which it is based? Add these ideas into your annotations.

Turn in your annotated column for feedback.

Read and Annotate

Read "Cut" by Bob Greene

Respond:

In "Cut" columnist Bob Greene addresses the significance that being cut from a sports team can play in one's life. He asserts that being cut can motivate children to become more successful. With your group, write an outline of an essay in which you agree, disagree, or qualify.

Think about... Will you use deductive or inductive reasoning? Will you frame your argument around a basic syllogism? How will you address appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos?
